Announcing the newest member of my family

2009-01-17 20:00 -

I adopted Misty today from Pyles of Smiles, a rescue organization in Cottonwood, CA (near Redding, CA). She’s a Samoyed puppy, about a year old, weighs 45 pounds, and is the most adorable and precious thing I can imagine. Like me, she’s very inquisitive, strong-willed, and smart, but quiet and sometimes a little shy. She was abandoned by her original family prior to being found, rescued, and adopted :).

I’ve wanted to have another Samoyed in my life ever since I left for college and no longer had Blizzard, my parents’ Samoyed, as a companion; he died while I was away at college. For obvious reasons, taking on the responsibility of caring for a dog during college wasn’t an option, but now that I have an independent life of my own, I’m in a position to finally have a canine family member living under my roof. Thanks to Google’s dog-friendliness, I should be able to take her to work starting Tuesday assuming that I confirm that she’s been potty trained well.

Jack London Square

2007-08-06 12:30 -

Yesterday, I ended up taking a group of five friends from out of town to the Jack London Square farmer’s market. We had a ton of fun, and ate many, many tasty things as well as brought some back home. Some of the highlights:

It's been too long...

2006-06-16 16:47 -

I just realized that I hadn’t posted anything in three months, mainly because third term ate me. I’ll have a somewhat more longish update as well as reflections on frosh year up here soon, but in the meanwhile…

I’m in the Bay Area this week. If you want to hang out with me, let me know, please! I’m here now through next Sunday.

People need to be quarantined after winter break

2006-01-09 08:03 -

If you’re sick and contagious, don’t come to class! If you’re going to ignore my advice above, at least don’t cough and sneeze in my face without covering yours. I’ve been knocked out for the past few days with “crazy ninja mutant flu” (TM), and my life is sucking quite plainly. Headache, fever, extreme tiredness, cough, sore throat, soreness… the list winds on and on. Fortunately, this weekend isn’t bad for getting sick in terms of workload, and I’m lucky that my friends took care of me, made soup, and brought me medicine, but geez, it’s definitely an Honor Code violation to knowingly spread germs in a crowded lecture hall. (Although it might be partly my fault for not having taken the free flu shot).

Happy belated holidays.

2005-12-25 23:36 -

I haven’t really celebrated the holidays in any meaningful way, except for taking the weekend off working on projects to play computer games, eat good food, soak in hot tubs, and relax on couches watching TV shows. Enjoy your holidays, whatever they may be celebrating.

Food Commune, Day 3

2005-12-18 19:05 -

Organizing a cooking commune was one of the best decisions I think I’ve made all break. It means I don’t have to work as hard to feed myself, I eat much better food than if I were eating alone, and I spend less on food. Spending an hour or two chitchatting during dinner is always a plus, although we’ve been doing less of that recently. The type of the food certainly varies a lot, depending upon who’s cooking.
Friday night: tomatoes and sweet onion drizzled with olive oil, chicken with peas in tomato sauce, rice krispie treats
Saturday night: scrambled eggs, bacon, and rolls
Sunday night: stir-fried noodles with various yummy vegetarian ingredients – lettuce, egg, cauliflower…

On the food-related note, I found out on Friday that I now weight 127 pounds with clothes on, which is utterly unacceptably low. Caltech Dining Services food really sucks, and I’ve lost somewhere between 8 and 10 pounds over my first term because of it, despite my efforts to eat as much as I could stand…
